Open Option Seeking Business (OPBU)

Admission Requirements

For information regarding the College of Business admission requirements:  Controlled Major List

Second Bachelor Candidate

  • If a student's first degree is in business, the College of Business will not accept that student for a second bachelor's degree in business.
  • The same admission requirements apply for second bachelor candidates as those for first bachelor candidates.  See above link for specific requirements. (top)

The Advising Process
While in Open Option Seeking Business, students will be assigned to an advisor at the Center for Advising and Student Achievement (CASA). Once students are admitted to Business, they should contact the College of Business Undergraduate Program at 491-5103. All students admitted to the Open Option Seeking Business program should be encouraged to plan to transfer into the College of Business within approximately 30 CSU credits for a transfer student and within 45 CSU credits for students admitted to CUS as new freshmen. (top)

Advising for First semester

  • Explore why the student is interested in business and if there are particular areas of business in which s/he is interested
  • Explain the admission requirements
  • Discuss alternate business-related majors. Many students aren't aware of other majors that are related to business and that may be more accessible to them (i.e., Restaurant Resort Management, Construction Management, Merchandising, Economics, etc.) (top)

Advising for Second Semester

  • Continue to explore student's interest in business
  • Give students the Open Option Seeking Business check sheet and explain the admission requirements and the rationale for planning to transfer to the College of Business within approximately 30 credits
  • If appropriate review several Academic and Career Horizon sheets
  • Remind students that they need to be admitted to the College of Business to take business courses during the fall and spring semesters
  • Discuss course scheduling in two or three semester increments since course sequencing and course combinations are important
  • It is important to complete MATH 117/MATH 118 in the first semester, in order to meet the enforced prerequisites for MATH 141 and ECON 202 as soon as possible
  • Some courses should NOT be taken together unless the student is strong in that area (i.e. CO 150/SPCM 200 or MATH 141/STAT 204 (top)

Advising for Third/Fourth Semester

Student should be advised to plan for an alternate major. (top)

Students Under a 3.0 GPA

  • Use "What if?" in the Student Advising Network (SAN)
  • Use "Target GPA" in the Student Advising Network (SAN)
  • Discuss the Repeat/Delete policy and the possibility of retaking courses
  • Review "Creative Paths to Business" packet (academic strengths, options)
  • Discuss course schedules that explore alternative majors
  • Check the number of credits earned and encourage students who are multiple credits from the GPA requirement to consider an alternate major. (top)

30 Credit Expectation in Open Option Seeking Business
The credit expectation is meant to help students to be realistic about a degree in business, it is not meant to deter students from choosing business initially. Students should be encouraged to consider an alternate major if they are not going to be able to meet the admission criteria for the College of Business within approximately 30 credits. Students should be aware that once they have completed all of the All-University Core Curriculum, they cannot take any business courses until they are admitted to the College of Business . Advisors should work with students who are approaching or exceeding the 30 credit expectation to choose an alternate major.

  • Review "Creative Paths to Business" Packet
  • Urge the student to change his/her major or to work toward an alternate major
  • Develop course schedules that explore alternative majors or schedule toward other majors
  • Discuss electives to work toward alternative majors, minors, focused electives, areas of emphasis, interdisciplinary study programs, etc.
  • Give students appropriate copies of the Academic and Career Horizon Sheets
  • Refer students who have NOT met the College of Business admission requirements to the Career Center for more information about career and internship opportunities
  • Students who have met the College of Business admission requirements should be encouraged to gain additional experience through involvement in business student organizations (more specific contact information at the College of Business Office), internships, informational interviews, etc. (top)

Appeals

  • Appeal forms are due by 4:30 PM on the last day of finals for the semester and can be obtained on the College of Business website. Appeals will be reviewed after the semester's grades are posted and students will be notified of the COB's decision within a week of the day grades are posted.
  • Students who wish to appeal admission to COB without meeting all admission criteria should be encouraged to do so ONLY WITH EXTREMELY EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES i.e., well documented illness, hospitalization, death in the family.
  • All decisions on an appeal are final; appeals may only be submitted once. (top)

Other Advising Tips

  • If students take a 300-level CSU business couse at a community college, they will get a 200-level transfer equivalency
  • A new transfer student who is admitted into OPBU and then completes all the admission requirements prior to the beginning of a semester, should meet with a CASA advisor to verify s/he has met the admission criteria for COB.  Student should then contact Admissions to request a change of major.  Student should also be referred to the COB Undergraduate Program Office in 178 Rockwell Hall.
  • If students earn a C in MATH 141, they MUST retake the course OR take MATH 155 or MATH 160 and earn a B- or better
  • If a student earns a C in ECON 202, s/he MUST retake that course and earn a B- or better
  • ACT 205, BUS 205, FIN 305, MKT 305, MGT 305, are usually open to all majors except Open Option Seeking Business. If a student is admitted to COB, only 6 credits of “05” business courses will be accepted
  • OPBU students interested in the Accounting concentration should not take ACT 205
  • Business core and economics courses completed 10 or more years prior to admission/readmission to the College of Business may not apply toward major requirements. (A student may challenge such courses through CLEP or Challenge Exams)
  • Transfer credit of “ECON**” may substitute for ECON 204 but NOT for ECON 202
  • A student who has taken CS 110 or AGRI 140 may, substitute these for CIS 150
  • STAT 301 or STAT 309 will count for STAT 204; MATH 155 or MATH 160 will satisfy MATH 141 requirement (grade of B- or higher is still required)
  • MATH 160 does not substitute for MATH 166
  • ACT 210 and ACT 220 are a combination of Financial and Managerial Accounting. It is recommended that students take both courses at Colorado State or both at a transfer institution.
  • At the end of each semester the College of Business determines the Open Option Seeking Business students who are admitted to the College. These students should plan to attend the COB Change of Major day that is scheduled each semester after grades are officially posted. At that time, student’s major will be changed and s/he will be advised by COB advisors.
  • If you do not attend the COB Change of Major day, your major will be changed two weeks later.  At this point, students should then contact the College of Business for proper advising.
  • For any referral of students to the College of Business, call the College to determine who is the best individual with whom to speak.  Referrals must not be trivial or related to policy of admittance to the College of Business. (top)
