MATH 117 - MATH 118  College Algebra in Context I & II  (each one credit)
Prerequisite:        Satisfactory performance on the CSU Math Placement Exam (or Prerequisite Exam) is the prerequisite for MATH 117.  MATH 117 is the prerequisite for MATH 118.  Prerequisites are enforced by the RAMweb registration system.

Description:  College Algebra in Context incorporates the investigation, interpretation, and application of concepts and skills traditionally identified with college algebra.  Topics include linear functions, absolute value and piecewise-defined functions, quadratic functions and relations, systems of equations, inequalities, polynomials and polynomial equations, rational and radical functions, inverse functions, and power functions.  A Texas Instruments TI-83®/TI-84® graphing calculator is required.

MATH 130 Mathematics in the Social Sciences  (3 credits)
Prerequisites:      Satisfactory performance on the CSU Math Placement Exam.  This prerequisite is enforced by the RAMweb registration system.
Description:  MATH 130 is intended to increase students’ understanding and appreciation of the importance and usefulness of mathematics by showing how discrete mathematics can be used in planning and decision-making.  Topics include voting theory, fair division, optimization, and probability.
MATH 130 is conducted in large classes using teaching strategies that emphasize cooperative group learning and active participation, reading, and writing.  Undergraduate course assistants help facilitate group work.
MATH 130 satisfies the mathematics requirement of the All-University Core Curriculum, but does not satisfy the prerequisites for any courses that use mathematics (such as economics, physical sciences, and statistics).

MATH 133 Financial Mathematics  (3 credits)
Prerequisites:      Satisfactory performance on the CSU Math Placement Exam, or Prerequisite Exam.  This prerequisite is enforced by the RAMweb registration system.
Description:   MATH 133 aims to help students acquire vocabulary, conceptual understanding, and computational skills that will enable them to make informed financial decisions.  Topics include pricing, taxes, insurance, interest, annuities, amortization, and investments.  Financial calculators and spreadsheets are essential tools in MATH 133.
MATH 133 is conducted in lecture-discussion format.  Students solve problems collaboratively in class.  After several scheduled sessions in a computer lab, students complete spreadsheet exercises outside class.
MATH 133 satisfies the mathematics requirement of the All-University Core Curriculum, but does not satisfy the prerequisites for any courses that use mathematics (such as economics, physical sciences, and statistics).

MATH 135 Patterns of Phenomena I  (3 credits)
Prerequisites:      Satisfactory performance on the CSU Math Placement Exam, or Prerequisite Exam.  This prerequisite is enforced by the RAMweb registration system.
Description:   MATH 135 aims to engage liberal arts students in the exploration of mathematical ideas and modes of thought and their application in the arts and humanities. Topics include symmetry, perspective, recursion, the mathematics of music, voting and game theory, and mathematical linguistics.
MATH 135 satisfies the mathematics requirement of the All-University Core Curriculum, but does not satisfy the prerequisites for any courses that use mathematics (such as economics, physical sciences, and statistics).
