LANGUAGE Placement Test Ranges for CSU’s
French, German and Spanish classes:
Any student with training in the language must take the test (this includes high school study and heritage speakers). Students with NO training or exposure to the language do NOT have to take the test; they simply enroll in 105.
Experienced students, whose advisors tell them to enroll in 105 without testing, will be required
to take the test once school begins and may be subsequently disenrolled from 105.
There is NO guarantee a seat will be available at the level in which the student tests this late in registration.
Placement test scores can be found under "Test Scores" at the bottom of individual records in Aries under "Advisor Tools". French, German or Spanish Foreign language test are scores from the on-line placement test. Find the language, then the score in the chart below in order to determine the recommended level.
Note: Most students are having trouble enrolling because they do not attempt to add both a lecture and the lab (L01) simultaneously. Most think it is a prerequisite problem when it is not.

- Students take the placement test online through an FLL home page link:
http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/?acct=colostatePassword: rams1 (all lower case)
- Scores will be entered in Ariesweb between 1 to 3 days after the test is completed.
- Can't remember class level or score? Students can look up scores by reentering the CAPE system, typing in information exactly as when the exam was initially taken and click "Resume". If this is not feasible, an advisor or FLL can look up the score in Aries and use the chart above to place the student. If the score is not in Aries, then either the test was taken too recently for the score to have downloaded from the test website, the student did not provide enough or accurate identifying information, or the student did not complete the test.
- There is a one-time-per-language charge of $10.00 to the student's account. Student can repeat the test in the same language, without charge.
- At the student's request, we will increase the score one level if the student is confident the score is a false low. If the student feels the score is a false high, then call the department office to find out who (a teacher in the target language) the student should speak to about lowering the score.
- Any student transferring in college-level language credit (including AP and IB) should NOT take the language placement test. Exact equivalents in transfer work will meet prerequisite requirements. Students who expect to earn AP or IB credit after they register during Preview should be warned to compare their Transfer Evaluation with their upcoming schedule; it is common to repeat coursework.
- Placement tests in languages other than French, German, or Spanish must be done by instructors in that field at the beginning of the semester. Have the student contact the department office, or arrange to simply go to a class at the beginning of the semester to speak with an instructor.
- The department reserves the right to disenroll students from courses for which they are over-qualified, regardless of placement test results. Students should be encouraged to speak to their instructors at the beginning of the semester with questions if they are not sure whether they are placed correctly.
- High placement scores will NOT earn placement credit. In fact, foreign language placement credit no longer exists.
- We do NOT do competency or challenge exams for students. This includes international students for whom English is their foreign language.
