- The Math Placement Examination Fee is still $15. This fee is charged to the student’s account the first time he/she takes the CSU Math Placement Exam (MPE). This charge will occur even if the student later decides not to attend Colorado State. There is no additional charge for further attempts of the placement exam.
- Students whose performance on the MPE indicates competence in one or more of the mini-courses MATH 117– MATH 126 comparable to that expected of students who have completed the mini-course(s) are placed out of and also qualify for academic credit in the corresponding mini-course(s). There is no additional charge for credit earned from the MPE. To ensure receiving credit earned on the MPE, students should register for the “placement” section (section 550) of the mini-course(s) in which they earned credit using the section ID numbers on the accompanying sheet.
- Remind students who are disappointed with their MPE results that the exam may be taken twice on campus in addition to their one remote (non-proctored) attempt. Encourage these students to review seriously and take the exam again. A complete set of tailored review materials can be found on the Math Dept web site (www.math.colostate.edu - click on the Math Placement Exam link). Students who take the exam a second time must take the exam on a walk-in basis in the PACe Testing Center (138 Weber) when classes are in session during our regular hours. The PACe Testing Center Hours:
June 16 – August 8 (Summer Session): Mon. – Fri. 9:00 AM – 1:15 PM
August 4 – August 19 Closed*
August 25 – December 12 (Fall Semester): Mon. – Fri. 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Mon. – Thurs. 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM
* There will be a walk-in session for placement exams (MPE or ELM Tutorial Exams) held August 21.
- Most students who receive the message “Eligible for MATH 130 *only*” on the placement report should be urged to prepare using the MPE review materials found on the Math Dept web site (www.math.colostate.edu - click on the Math Placement Exam link), and to retake the exam. MATH 130 is a terminal math course; it does not prepare students for any other course at the University. Settling for this default placement outcome will limit students’ opportunities to explore other disciplines and to take full advantage of the wide array of University courses.
- Students who do not satisfy prerequisites for the entry-level mathematics courses MATH 117, MATH 133, MATH 135 can repair their backgrounds by completing the Entry-Level Mathematics (ELM) Tutorial and taking a proctored Prerequisite Exam. The tutorial is accessible from the web page where students completed the MPE remotely (http://online.math.colostate.edu/placement). Students can also check their placement results at any time using this web site.
- The last day to register for mathematics courses, including the PACe mini-courses, is the end of the first week of classes. Course prerequisites are strictly enforced by both RAMweb and the PACe Program for MATH 117-MATH 126. To satisfy RAMweb registration requirements, students will need to register for an appropriate combination of mini-courses to ensure that prerequisites are satisfied.
Preview students should register for the entire package of mini-courses they plan to take this term.
All students will register for section 001 of the PACe mini-courses. Students may reserve a seat in the Instructor Paced Classes by using the PACeCenter’sin-house reservation system. Details will be emailed to all registered students in mid-August. The accompanying schedule of Instructor Paced Classes will help students who plan to take several mini-courses select a sequence that will meet in the same time slot.
- It is CRITICAL for students to attend the PACe Orientation during the first week of fall classes. We need your help in convincing students to attend! All course requirements and resources will be discussed in the orientation. The PACe Program is continuing to evolve, and our course requirements are evolving, too. We will be using RAMmail to send email reminders to students about the Orientation.
- In simplest form, the message your students should leave with includes:
- Placement results à what they need to do (study & retest?)
- What math courses to register for
- If taking PACe mini-courses, attend orientation during the first week of fall classes! Watch for email announcements for the Orientation schedule, plus the opportunity to reserve seats in the Instructor Paced Classes.
