The Center for Advising and Student Achievement's Scholastic Standards Information
Scholastic Standards
The Scholastic Standards Policy (see "Scholastic Standards" section in the Colorado State University General Catalog) is administered by the Center for Advising and Student Achievement (CASA) under the supervision of the Committee on Scholastic Standards to maintain academic standards of excellence, and ensure that a degree obtained from Colorado State is of high value. The committee is made up of one faculty representative from each of the eight colleges and the Assistant Director of the Center for Advising and Student Achievement. Students may be directed to CASA for advising on scholastic standards.
First Semester on Probation (P1)
Students are placed on probation when their cumulative GPA falls below a “C” (2.0). The grade report on RAMweb indicates the student's academic status i.e. GS, P1, P2, DA. The student is also sent a letter stating s/he is being placed on academic probation.
Second Semester on Probation (P2)
If a student remains below a cumulative GPA of 2.0 at the end of the first probation semester, the grade report on RAMweb indicates that s/he is continuing on the second and final semester on probation. A registration hold or advising code may be placed on students in this category to encourage them to seek advising assistance. In addition, during the semester the student will be sent three letters and an email notifying them of their academic status and appeal option.
Return to Good Academic Status
If a student on probation achieves a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better by the end of a probation semester, s/he will be sent a cleared letter and removed from probation, thereby returning to “Good” academic status.
Dismissal
At the end of two consecutive semesters on probation, if a student's cumulative GPA remains below 2.0, s/he will be dismissed. The grade report on RAMweb will indicate an academic status of dismissal and a dismissal letter will be mailed.
Appeal
Students in dismissal status have the privilege of appealing their dismissal from the University. An online appeal may be submitted to the Center for Advising and Student Achievement for consideration by the Committee on Scholastic Standards. If an appeal is granted, students have one additional semester to bring their cumulative GPA to a 2.0.
Students must complete an appeal form explaining why their grades have fallen, what steps they have taken to improve academic performance, and a plan to return to good status. The appeal will be more credible if accompanied by supporting documentation from doctors, therapists, professors, advisors or residence hall assistants. There is a deadline for dismissal appeals each semester.
Personal Interview
A student whose dismissal appeal has been denied may make a written request for a personal interview before the Committee on Scholastic Standards. This request should be submitted only if they have new information to present to the Committee since presenting their dismissal appeal. After the personal interview, the committee's decision will be communicated to the student by mail.
Registration Cancellation
Class registration for dismissed students will be canceled before the beginning of the next regular semester. Students who appeal and are granted one additional semester on probation will not have their registration canceled for the next semester.
