Preparing for your Advising Appointment


Have an advising appointment?  Then come prepared.  The following is a starting point of how you can prepare before your appointment so that you can maximize your time with your academic advisor.  Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Spend some time reflecting
    • What do you really enjoy learning/doing?
    • Which classes interest you the most?  Why?

  • Research possible majors by checking out

  • Explore Clubs and Student Organizations (link to student orgs website)

Also, it is important to come to your appointment prepared with a list of questions to ask.  Below are some ideas to get you started:

    • Are there entrance requirements to the majors I am seeking?
    • How can I get more information about majors and careers?
    • What if I have no idea what I want to major in?
    • What types of classes would I expect from a major in ______?
    • How can I declare my major?
    • What should I be taking next semester to fulfill my AUCC requirements?
    • What classes do you suggest for exploring a major in ____________ ?
