 Majors with Entrance Requirements

A number of majors at Colorado State University (CSU) have specific entrance requirements.  Below is a list of majors with specific entrance requirements.

**Please note that these requirements apply to current CSU students only. New / incoming students should contact the Office of Admissions about being admitted any of the majors listed below.

Art
Biomedical Sciences

In addition, a number of majors require that students go through a portfolio review or audition in order to progress to the second year in the major.  Below is a list of the majors with specific requirements for progression into the second year.

Apparel Design and Production

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Portfolio review – see department for requirements and due date/time.
AM143 required
2.5 cumulative GPA

COURSE SELECTION
Students must declare a major in Apparel and Merchandising to take the first-year courses.  Upon completion of the first year, students will undergo a portfolio review in order to progress into the 200-level courses.


Art

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Complete a minimum of 12 graded credits at CSU with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at CSU.

COURSE SELECTION
In addition to core courses, select introductory/exploratory courses in which you are interested.  Note that availability of art courses may be limited until you are ART100 (Introduction to Visual Arts) will substitute for
ART110 (History of Western Art I).


Biological Science, Botany, Zoology

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Grade of C or better in:
one year of biology (LIFE102 & LIFE103 OR BZ110/111 and BZ120)
one year of chemistry (CHEM111/112 and CHEM113/114)
readiness for calculus (MATH125 or MATH126) with grades of C or better


Biomedical Sciences

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Students who have completed LIFE102 and CHEM111/112 with a B or better and have a CSU GPA of 3.3 on a minimum of 12 credits will be placed on a waiting list for the major.  The department will determine space availability and admission into the program.


Business

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS*
A minimum of 15 graded CSU credits; minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 at CSU.
M ATH141 (Calculus-Management Science) and ECON202 (Microeconomics) with a
CSU grade of B- or better in both or a transfer grade of B in either/both.
*If you do not meet these criteria by the semester in which you reach 45 CSU                                     
credits, you must choose a major other than Business

COURSE SELECTION
Register or place out of MATH117/118 and MATH141 during the first year.
Must be admitted to the College before taking Business courses. 


Computer Science

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
CS160 (Java Programming) and MATH160 (Calculus-Physical Scientists I) with a                              
CSU grade of C or better for both.  A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 at CSU.


Construction Management

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Prior to August 2008: Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.3 at CSU.

After August 2008: both freshmen and transfer (external and internal) students will be admitted as “Pre-Construction Management”. As Pre-CM students they will need to meet the following minimum requirements to be eligible to apply to the CM program:

    • Completion of 15 credits at CSU
    • Earn a 2.75 gpa
    • Completion of CON 101 (Introduction to Construction Management) and earn a B or better
    • Completion of CO 150 (College Composition) and earn a B or better
    • Completion of MATH 125 (Numerical Trigonometry) and earn a C or better

Education – Teacher License

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 at CSU. 
Social Studies / History major must earn a 3.0 cummulative GPA.


Engineering

Admission Requirements for Chemical and Biological Engineering:

  • You must complete a minimum of 16 credits at CSU, including MATH160 (Calculus for Physical Scientists) and PH141 (Physics for Scientists and Engineers) andCHEM111/112 (General Chemistry I with Lab).
  • You must earn at least one grade of B in the three courses, and nothing lower than a C in the other two courses. (minuses are accepted, although the department will want to discuss those grades with the student)
  • You must also earn a 2.3 cumulative GPA at CSU.

Admission Requirements for Civil and Environmental Engineering:

  • You must complete a minimum of 16 credits at CSU, including MATH160 (Calculus for Physical Scientists) and either PH141 (Physics for Scientists and Engineers) or CHEM111/112 (General Chemistry I with Lab).
  • You must earn at least one grade of B and one grade of C in the two courses. (minus grades are accepted)
  • You must earn a 2.3 cumulative GPA at CSU
  • The math and science courses must be taken at CSU.  If they are taken elsewhere, the student will take a higher math or science and be expected to earn the B/C grade combination in those courses.

Admission Requirements for Electrical and Computer Engineering:

  • You must complete 16 credits at CSU, including PH141 (Physics for Scientists and Engineers) and MATH160 (Calculus for Physical Scientists) with a minimum grade of B in each course (minus grades are NOT accepted).  Higher calculus or physics courses may also be used to meet this requirement.
  • You must also earn a 2.3 cumulative GPA at CSU.

Admission Requirements for Engineering Science:

  • You must complete 16 credits at CSU, including MATH160 (Calculus for Physical Scientists) and either PH141 (Physics for Scientists and Engineers) or CHEM111/112 (General Chemistry I with Lab).
  • You must earn at least one grade of B and one grade of C in the two courses. (minus grades are NOT accepted)
  • You must earn a 2.3 cumulative GPA at CSU

Admission Requirements for Mechanical Engineering:  

  • You must complete 16 credits at CSU, including MATH160 (Calculus for Physical Scientists) and either PHY141 (Physics for Scientists and Engineers) or CHEM111 (General Chemistry I)
  • You must earn at least one grade of B and one grade of C in the two courses. (minus grades are NOT accepted)
  • You must also earn a 2.75 cumulative GPA at CSU.

Human Development and Family Studies

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Registered for or completed PSY100 and SOC100


Interior Design

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Design Scenario review required.  Students must take INTD129 and INTD166  prior to the Design Scenario.  ART101 and CON151 must be completed prior to the fall of sophomore year, and may be taken in the summer.  GPA of 2.5 required.


Landscape Architecture

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Completion of 16 credits and LAND230 (which serves as a portfolio review)             


Music

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Audition in area of specialty, and minimum grades of C in music courses for major


Political Science

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Two Political Science courses with at least a B/C combination.  Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 at CSU.   


Restaurant and Resort Management

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Complete FSHN150 and CHEM107 with at least a C.  Minimum cumulative GPA of  2.7 at CSU.


Technical Journalism

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
JTC100 (Introduction to Mass Media) and JTC210 (Newswriting) with at least a B in
one course and  C in the other (no minuses).
Earn a minimum of 12 CSU credits and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.9 at CSU.
                 
COURSE SELECTION
Register for JTC100 and CO150 (College Composition) in the first year.
It is recommended to complete CO150 before taking JTC210.
It is important to register for JOU210 as soon as you have registration access as
the course fills quickly. You may want to discuss options for taking this course                   
elsewhere with your advisor.
