Calculating GPA and Target GPA

CALCULATING GRADE POINT AVERAGE

1) Calculate total quality points using the following scale of grades multiplied by the number of credits for each course.

2) Add up the total number of credits and the total quality points.

3) Divide the total quality points by the total credits. The result is the grade point average.

GRADING

Term grades are reported by letter only. The scale of grades and quality points follows:

Grade Quality Points per Credit
A+ 4.000
A (Excellent) 4.000
A- 3.667
B+ 3.334
B (Good) 3.000
B- 2.667
C+ 2.334
C (Average) 2.000
C- 1.667
D+ 1.334
D (Poor, but passing) 1.000
D- .667
I (Incomplete) *
F (Failure) 0.000
W (Withdrawal) *
S (Satisfactory) **
H (Honors) **
U (Unsatisfactory) ***
AU Audit) *
NG (No Grade Reported *

* Credits not used to compute grade point average (GPA) and not counted toward graduation.
** Credits not used to compute GPA but counted toward graduation. Performance equivalent to a grade of D+/D/D- or better is recorded as S (pass).
*** Credits not used to compute grade point average (GPA) and not counted toward graduation. Performance equivalent to a grade of F is recorded as U (fail).

Credits for courses graded F and WF are used to compute GPA, but they do not count toward graduation (WF grades were not issued after Summer Session 1979).

When an X is placed before a grade, e.g., XA, XB, etc., the student has been granted an academic fresh start. These grades are not calculated into the grade point average.

When a # symbol is placed before the grade, the student has elected to repeat the course under the terms of the University's Repeat/Delete policy. The original course grade is not calculated into the grade point average.

Example:
Course Grade Quality Points per Credit x Credit Hours = Total Quality Points
CO 150   B+ 3.334 3.0 10.002
MATH117   C 2.000 1.0 2.000
CHEM111   A- 3.667 + 4.0 + 14.668
8.0 26.67

26.67 ÷ 8.0 = 3.334

Calculating Target Grade Point Average

1) Calculate Total GPA Credits at the End of the Current Term

  • Add Completed GPA Credits and Current Enrollment GPA Credits, which are found on the student's transcript.
  • Do not include pass/fail courses.
  • If student is repeat/deleting any credits, do not include the repeat/deleted credits in this step.

Example:
    No Repeat/Delete   Repeat/Delete (3cr.)
Completed GPA Credits   28   28
Current Enrollment GPA Credits + 13 + 10
Total GPA Credits at the End of the Current Term   41   38

2) Calculate Cumulative Grade Points Needed by the End of the Current Term

•  Multiply the new total of GPA Credits at the end of the current term by the desired GPA.

Example:
No Repeat/Delete Repeat/Delete (3cr.)
Total GPA Credits at the End of Term 41.0 38.0
Desired GPA x 2.000 x 2.000
Cumulative Grade Points Needed by the End of the Term 82.000 76.000

3) Calculate Remaining Grade Points Needed by the End of the Term

  • Subtract Completed Grade Points (found on transcript) from Cumulative Grade Points needed by end of the term.
  • If student is repeat/deleting any credits for which they received a D- or higher, add the grade points awarded from that course to the Remaining Grade Points Needed by the End of the Term.

  • Example:
    No Repeat/Delete Repeat/Delete (3cr.)
Cumulative Grade Points Needed by the End of the Term 82.000 76.000
    Completed Grade Points - 52.667 - 52.667
Remaining Grade Points Needed by the End of the Term 29.333 23.333
    23.333
    Repeat/Delete Credits + 3.00
    26.333

     4) Calculate Term GPA Needed to Get to Desired Cumulative GPA

    • Divide Remaining Grade Points Needed by the End of the Term by the Number of Current Enrollment GPA Credits.
    • If the student is repeat/deleting any credits, use the TOTAL Number of Current Enrollment Credits INCLUDING the credits that are being repeat/deleted.

    Example:
    No Repeat/Delete Repeat/Delete (3cr.)
Remaining Grade Points Needed by the End of the Term 29.333 26.333
Current Enrollment GPA Credits 13.0 13.0
Term GPA Credit Needed to Achieve Desired Cumulative GPA 2.2564 2.0256
